Miller http://tlew.org/?p=461 Learn more »]]> The Toledo, Lake Erie and Western Railroad Museum will hold a regularly scheduled general membership meeting on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 10:00AM at the Grand Rapids Library, 17600 Bridge Street, Grand Rapids, Ohio. The Nominations Committee will oversee nominations for the Board of Trustees. Valid 2013 Members were mailed a nomination form to completed and returned on or before June 15th’s meeting. Per the TLEW bylaws, a Special meeting in July (date to be announced) will be held to cast ballots for the Board of Trustees. Representatives from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office will be on hand at the elections meeting to go over Non-Profit guidelines and rules. Proxy/absentee votes through mail will be accepted for those out of state or out of area members, determined by Nomination Committee. Any questions, please call President Clarice Wyse, 418-583-0457.

Opportunity strikes on the TLE&W Railway. The return of the Bluebird begins to fly.

The Toledo, Lake Erie and Western Railway (TLE) is now providing storage space for customers along the 10 mile stretch of like from Waterville to Grand Rapids providing for a bright new future of service. Since 2008 the organization has been searching for innovative ways to support operation of our beloved “Blue Bird” passenger train. These goals can be made possible in future years by beginning to create revenue for much needed track upgrade and maintenance. Recently, a lease deal was struck up with Midwest Rail, LLC. a local start up company, to provide the management necessary to create this opportunity and continue the necessary maintenance.

This opportunity represent continued goals of economic development through shortline freight and tourism. Last week the TLE received the first delivery of empty hoppers to store for the upcoming months, which will boost the railroads ability to maintain the line properly.

Economic activity from tourist trains and freight attract much needed business and provide jobs to the City of Waterville, Grand Rapids, and the Toledo Metro area.

Tourism last year generated $2.7 billion in taxes for Ohio – $1.6 billion in state taxes and $1.1 billion in local taxes. This growth in sales helped increase tourism employment to 443,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs with an associated income of $10.6 billion, an increase of 4,000 jobs over 2010.

“About 1 in every 11.5 jobs or 8.7 percent of Ohio’s jobs in 2011 were sustained by Ohio’s tourism industry,” said Amir Eylon, State Tourism Director. “Tourism is a resilient industry with the ability to quickly add new jobs to meet increased demand, which has put it at the forefront of economic recovery.”

Projects such as the Depot Revitalization can occur as the railroad’s success continues and more support is gained. Historic equipment can be purchased and maintained, as well as volunteer enhancement programs can be developed. Great opportunity has begun, and as a team it will continue.
