Clover Leaf Crew

Branded in 2026, the Clover Leaf Crew comprises the adult (21+) track, mechanical, and restoration forces at the Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway and Museum. The crew’s name pays homage to the historic Clover Leaf Route (the Toledo, St. Louis & Western Railroad), the original builder and operator of the historic rail line that TLE&W preserves and operates today.

On standard commercial railroads, track maintenance, equipment mechanics, and historic preservation are typically separated into distinct departments. At the TLE&W, our volunteers cross-train across all disciplines under one unified banner.

Maintenance of Way

As a working teaching railroad, the Clover Leaf Crew handles the essential upkeep of our track superstructure and right-of-way. Volunteers learn both traditional 19th- and 20th-century track-building techniques using hand tools—such as track jacks, claw bars, and tie tongs—alongside modern power tools and heavy machinery. Key responsibilities include:

  • Inspecting and replacing wooden track ties (crossties).
  • Spiking, gauging, and leveling rail.
  • Spreading and tamping ballast for proper drainage and track stability.
  • Maintaining switches, line clearance, and right-of-way brush management.

Roadway Mechanics

Keeping historic rail equipment moving requires mechanical team. Our mechanics maintain and overhaul a wide variety of equipment, ranging from gas and diesel engines and rolling stock to heavy support machinery like payloaders, skid steers, and excavators.

Members with experience on steam locomotives at regional rail museums bring specialized expertise to guide TLE&W’s ongoing steam restoration projects, while mentoring newer members in internal combustion engine repair and hydraulic maintenance.

Restoration

The restoration team brings historic rolling stock back to life. Combining skills in welding, metal fabrication, carpentry, upholstery, and painting, team members work diligently to preserve artifacts such as our Wabash 553 flat car and restore passenger coach interiors to their original era appearance.

Safety First: Our Commitment & Standards

A Collaborative Effort

Education is central to our mission. Members of the Clover Leaf Crew actively mentor the next generation of railroad preservers by working alongside our Youth Maintenance-of-Way (Y-MOW) program. Through hands-on guidance, decades of combined trade experience are passed down to younger volunteers.

Whether you are an experienced tradesperson, a seasoned railfan, or someone eager to learn a new skill, we welcome you to join the TLE&W as a member and take part in the Clover Leaf Crew.
