As a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we are passionate about preserving Northwest Ohio’s rich railroad heritage. For over 50 years, we’ve been committed to educating the public, showcasing vintage locomotives and railcars, and creating memorable experiences for families and rail enthusiasts alike.
Today, we’re reaching out to you—our community and supporters—to help us take the next big steps forward.
Our Dream to Bring Back the Bluebird Passenger Train
We have a deep-seated desire to revive the iconic Bluebird Passenger Train, which has been a beloved part of our operations since 1969. This scenic excursion train once carried passengers along the beautiful Maumee River between Waterville and Grand Rapids, Ohio, offering glimpses of history and nature that captivated generations.
After a pause in service for essential track work, we’re now in the midst of an exciting restoration project. Phase I is underway—focusing on replacing approximately 1,500 mainline ties, stabilizing culverts, clearing vegetation, building a new platform at Yawberg Rd, repairing axles on locomotives like our Alco S4 (5109), restoring coaches, and preparing crews through updated training and rule books.
Bringing the Bluebird back isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about reconnecting people with the thrill of rail travel, fostering community pride, and sharing stories of our region’s transportation past. We envision families laughing in the coaches, history buffs exploring the exhibits, and new visitors discovering the magic of steam and diesel eras. Your support will help us complete this starter segment between Patton Rd and Jeffers Rd (targeted for early operations in 2026), replace more infrastructure, train volunteers, and expand in future phases. Every donation brings us closer to hearing the whistle blow once more.
Investing in the Museum Itself for a Lasting Legacy
While the Bluebird revival is at the heart of our current efforts, we also want to strengthen the museum as a whole. Our 10-mile historic track, vintage equipment collection, and educational programs need ongoing care to thrive. We’re planning investments in facility upgrades, such as improved exhibits, accessible pathways, interactive displays, and better preservation of our artifacts highlighting Northwest Ohio’s railroad history—from the Clover Leaf Route’s origins in 1875 to today.
These enhancements will allow us to host more events (like open houses and motorcar rides from May to October), expand school outreach, and ensure our museum remains a vibrant hub for learning, inspiration, and community gathering. By supporting us, you’re not only helping revive the Bluebird but also building a stronger future for the entire TLE&W experience.
How You Can Help Us Move Forward
We can’t do this without you. Your generous contributions will directly fuel these initiatives, and as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, your donations are tax-deductible. Whether it’s a one-time gift or recurring support, every amount makes a real difference.
Does your employer offer matching contributions? Many companies will match your donation dollar-for-dollar (or even more!), helping your gift go twice as far to support the Bluebird revival and our museum. Check with your HR department or benefits portal today—it’s often a quick and simple process, and we’d be thrilled to receive the matched funds to accelerate our restoration work!
