Welcome to Our Scenic Motorcar Experience
🎉 Motorcar Season is Now Open!
Come ride with us!
While we prepare the historic Bluebird Passenger Train for its return to service, enjoy a unique rail adventure aboard our motorcar! This short, narrated ride takes you across our iconic bridge and along the line to the passenger platform at Grand Rapids Road.
Canal Era (1830s–1880s)
In the 1840s, the Miami and Erie Canal turned Grand Rapids, Ohio, into a thriving commercial hub. This 274-mile waterway connected Cincinnati to Toledo, moving grain, lumber, coal, and goods by mule-drawn boats. Lock 44 and the water-powered Isaac Ludwig Mill (still demonstrating today) kept this section especially busy. Though groundbreaking, canal transport was slow (~3 mph), seasonal, and vulnerable to weather—shortcomings that railroads would soon exploit.
Rail Era (1880s–1970s)
Railroads rapidly replaced the canal with faster, all-weather service. The most notable line through Grand Rapids was the Clover Leaf Route—the Toledo, St. Louis & Western Railroad (TStL&W). It gained fame as a resilient “wandering” railroad that, after merging with the Nickel Plate Road in 1922, created a valuable direct route from Toledo to St. Louis despite challenging terrain.
The engineering centerpiece remains our 901-foot through-truss bridge over the Maumee River. Rebuilt in 1916 after the Great Flood destroyed the original, it is the longest railroad bridge operated by any tourist railroad east of the Mississippi. Here the Clover Leaf line crosses dramatically above the preserved Miami and Erie Canal and modern Route 424 / S River Road, forming a striking vertical snapshot of transportation history.
Regular freight service on the Clover Leaf Route through Grand Rapids continued until the early-to-mid 1970s. A major derailment near Continental, Ohio, accelerated the decline. By 1975, rails were removed southward from Grand Rapids as Norfolk & Western (successor to the Nickel Plate) abandoned much of the line. The 15-mile segment from Waterville to Grand Rapids was saved and acquired by us at the Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway (TLE&W), and have operated it as a heritage railroad ever since.
Highway & Trucking Era (1950s–Present)
Post-World War II highways and trucks delivered unmatched flexibility for door-to-door freight. The interstate system and improved roads (often built near old canal and rail routes) shifted the majority of goods movement to rubber tires. The Miami and Erie Canal had already been abandoned by 1929, and by the 1970s most remaining rail freight followed suit.
A Living Timeline You Can Ride
Today, this one location in Grand Rapids beautifully illustrates America’s transportation evolution: the old canal below, our historic rail bridge overhead, and the highway running beneath. On a Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway motorcar ride, you’ll cross that same iconic 901-foot bridge—riding the preserved Clover Leaf route while looking down on the waterways and roads that preceded and outlasted it. When our beloved Bluebird Passenger Train returns, the historic Clover Leaf Route between Grand Rapids and Waterville will once again echo with the rhythmic clickety-clack of the coaches, the proud call of the locomotive’s horn, and the conductor’s timeless call of ‘All aboard!’ on the Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway.
This layered crossing is one of the most photogenic and historically rich spots on our line. Come experience the full story for yourself!
