Step aboard and become part of preserving Northwest Ohio’s rich railroad history! At the Toledo, Lake Erie & Western Railway and Museum (TLE&W), volunteering isn’t just about helping out—it’s about keeping the spirit of the rails alive through hands-on work on locomotives, tracks, and timeless stories.

Our dedicated volunteers are the engine driving our mission forward. Whether you’re a history buff, a hands-on builder, or someone eager to connect with the community, there’s a place for you on our crew. Join us in safeguarding a piece of America’s transportation legacy while creating unforgettable experiences for visitors of all ages.

Our Story: A Legacy on the Rails

Since 1965, TLE&W has been dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of railroading in Northwest Ohio. Our 10-mile track stretches between Waterville and Grand Rapids, Ohio, offering scenic rides along the Maumee River.

Originally part of the Toledo, St. Louis and Western Railroad (nicknamed the “Clover Leaf Route”), our organization has grown through passionate volunteer efforts. Key milestones include acquiring a 1916 bridge in 2005 and incorporating the Waterfront Electric Railway Museum in 2014. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we’re entirely volunteer-run and rely on community support to keep operations on track.

Why Volunteer? Make Tracks That Last

Volunteering at TLE&W is more than a commitment—it’s an adventure! Build lifelong friendships, gain practical skills like welding and carpentry, and enjoy perks such as behind-the-scenes access and exclusive event invites.

Whether coordinating events or restoring historic assets, your contributions help sustain our rail heritage for future generations. No prior experience? No problem—we provide training and welcome all skill levels.
