Classification: Non-revenue caboose car (AAR Type M930)
Original Use: Rear-end car on freight trains, serving as mobile office, lookout post, and crew quarters for the Nickel Plate Road.

This steel bay window caboose, originally built in 1962 for the Nickel Plate Road, represents a key era in American railroading when cabooses served as vital mobile offices, living quarters, and observation posts for train crews at the rear of freight trains.

Build and Early Service

  • Builder and Date: Constructed in 1962 by the International Car Company in Kenton, OH, featuring the bay window design for superior side visibility over the length of the train.
  • Class and Specifications: Steel-bodied caboose with offset bay windows on both sides, equipped with bunks, stove, desk, and other crew amenities typical of early-1960s designs.
  • Original Owner and Role: Delivered new to the Nickel Plate Road for mainline freight service, monitoring train integrity, air brake performance, and providing crew facilities across the system.

Service Life and Retirement

  • Nickel Plate Road Era (1962–1964): Operated in freight service on the NKP’s extensive Midwest network, including high-speed manifest and local trains.
  • Norfolk & Western Era (1964 onward): Following the 1964 merger of the Nickel Plate Road into the Norfolk & Western Railway, the caboose was renumbered 557575 and continued in service on former NKP routes and the broader N&W system.
  • Final Years: Remained in active use into the early 1980s as one of the last traditional cabooses on the railroad. Phased out with the widespread adoption of end-of-train devices (EOTDs/FREDs) in the 1980s–1990s, which replaced cabooses for monitoring train integrity, braking, and rear-end protection.
